Project Overview

Six Years. One Creative Partnership.

FAMA — the Festival of Arabic Music and Arts — is an annual cultural event held across the Greater Toronto Area, produced by Maple Arts. The festival runs concerts, film screenings, and live performances that celebrate Arabic heritage for one of the most diverse urban audiences in the world.

Storm Design Studio has been Maple Arts' creative partner and Main Media Sponsor for FAMA since the studio's founding — six consecutive years of festival identity work, each edition building on the last. This is not a transactional relationship: the creative direction, visual language, and brand standards for FAMA have been developed and maintained by Storm across every edition.

FAMA 2024 marked another step forward — a complete visual identity system built for the festival's widest audience yet, across outdoor signage, digital campaigns, social media, and all event materials.

The Challenge

Arabic Heritage, Canadian Audience

Cultural festival branding carries a specific tension: stay too traditional and the identity reads as exclusive; go too contemporary and you lose the cultural authenticity that gives the event its meaning. FAMA's audience in Toronto is multicultural by nature — Arabic diaspora communities alongside Canadians with no prior connection to the culture. The visual identity had to bridge both without compromising either.

Beyond the cultural balance, FAMA needed a consistent identity system that worked at scale — across large-format outdoor signage, digital platforms, social media content, and physical event materials — all activated within a tight production timeline.

WHAT WE DID

  • • Developed the full FAMA 2024 visual identity
  • • Drew from Arabic cultural references for contemporary design
  • • Built a cohesive system across digital and physical touchpoints
  • • Designed outdoor signage for the Greater Toronto Area
  • • Produced social media content and digital campaign assets
  • • Delivered all event materials production-ready

Storm 4D Method®

How We Work: From Research to Reality

1/4 Discover

We reviewed FAMA's audience makeup, previous editions, and the cultural references that give the festival its identity — identifying how to translate Arabic heritage into a visual language that reads clearly to a multicultural Canadian audience.

2/4 Define

We defined the creative direction around the intersection of tradition and contemporary design — Arabic cultural forms reinterpreted through bold, modern typography and graphic systems built for high visibility at scale.

3/4 Design

We built a complete visual language for FAMA 2024 — drawing from Arabic culture and translating it into dynamic, modern design elements that work equally well on a Toronto billboard and a social media post.

4/4 Deliver

We produced and delivered a full suite of branded assets across outdoor signage, digital campaigns, social media content, and event materials — all production-ready and activated ahead of the festival launch.
